Indian Sari Dress

I bought the most beautiful mustard and deep purple sari silk in Delhi last year and have been saving it for a special occasion. It's one of my best friend's birthday this week and she's emigrating to Australia, so it will definitely be a special occasion. There are 6 metres of various parts and I draped it on the stand to see which parts would make a nice 50s style dress.






I love the block colour idea, but think the all purple idea would suit me better.

Tie-front Dress Progress

I have finished the tie-front bodice inspired by the Pattern Magic books. I made it up in a reproduction 1950s style cotton quilting fabric. Just need to decide on the skirt style now. I'm thinking pleated or gathered.

Custom Dress

I am so excited to be making a custom dress for a lovely lady in the States. Here are the first set of pattern drafting pics. I really want to get cracking on this quickly. I'm looking for a lightweight wool or wool-type synthetic mix (suiting material), so if anyone can recommend something, please let me know.

This is the dress I am basing it on- beautiful draping with a retro feel. I have marked on bust, waist and hip lines to give me an idea of where to split the basic block I have drafted for her.

This is the bodice section- I will cut this in fabric today and see how it works, as paper doesn't give a true representation of the drapes.

This is the mid-section. I have included photos of how to 'slash and spread', for those of you interested in pattern adaptation. I have marked on where I want the extra fabric (across the whole panel) and the spread it evenly, sticking it down onto a paper backing (see next photo).

This is how it is looking currently. It will look much better in fabric. I think the mid-section may need raising a little and the bodice section shortening, to reflect the design better.

Thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated!

Stunning!

I forgot to add this stunning dress to my list of findings yesterday: it is a vintage-inspired, silk dress by Toast. It was such a bargain; I dread to think what it cost new. I am seriously debating whether or not to sell it. I'm in love with it, but have no place to where it :( ... Someone take me to a ball...!

Vintage Goodwood

First ever Vintage Goodwood! What a amazing festival! I was so awe-inspired by the fashions, hairstyles, make-up, not to mention the music, art, design.... the list goes on. It was really well organised and thought out and so not like any other festival I've been to. There was mud, but there were wood chippings; there was fast food, but made from good quality ingredients; there was shopping, but wow the vintage wares on offer were incredible!!!

Vintage Vogue Competition

I am entering a Vintage Vogue competition via Sew Direct. You start with a current pattern from the Vintage Vogue range and adapt/ customise/ modernise in any way you like. I am using V1171 and going for Steven Alan/ APC/ red, white and blue inspiration.
