I bought the most beautiful mustard and deep purple sari silk in Delhi last year and have been saving it for a special occasion. It's one of my best friend's birthday this week and she's emigrating to Australia, so it will definitely be a special occasion. There are 6 metres of various parts and I draped it on the stand to see which parts would make a nice 50s style dress.
I love the block colour idea, but think the all purple idea would suit me better.

I love using sari fabric in new ways. I made some dresses for my daughters here

Using the finished edge as the bottom hem like you are showing is a great tip.
I live in the Indian bazaar so it is readily available. I would love if you post photos of your finished garment! Both the gold and purple are grand.
Hi, I love your post! The colours in the saris you used are just beautiful and how lucky you are to have a bazaar. I wish I'd stocked up on silk and bangles when I was in India! I've been working on the bodice all day and will post some more photos of work in progress.
